One in five Colorado women do not gain enough weight during pregnancy!

Colorado women who do not gain enough weight during pregnancy are more than one and a half times as likely to deliver a low birthweight infant (a baby weighing 5 pounds, 8 ounces or less) compared to women who gain enough weight.

Low birthweight babies are not just small babies!

They are more likely to have serious health problems and long term disabilities, like cerebral palsy, sight and hearing problems and learning problems in school.

Colorado has one of the highest low birthweight rates in the nation.

In 2005 the state’s low birthweight rate was 9.3 percent, with over 6,000 babies born low birthweight. According to Tipping the Scales: Weighing in on Solutions to the Low Birth Weight Problem in Colorado, a study conducted by the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment, inadequate weight gain during pregnancy was the largest contributor to the number of low weight births for women carrying just one baby.
